Autograph letter signed with initials : Edinburgh, to the Marchioness of Abercorn, [1811] Feb. 23.

Sending her an engraving of his recently deceased dog Camp and mentioning that his friends have written many elegies to the dog; referencing Lord Melville and thanking her for taking an interest in his affairs regarding his appointment to a clerkship, noting that Mr. David Hume has been appointed but "by way of compensation to me for passing me over they now propose to give my colleague Mr. Geo. Home a pension under the Act for priding superannuated office-holders," and stating that he is "perfectly satisfied" with the arrangement; discussing other promotions and appointments; copying two stanzas from Abraham Cowley's The Complaint and comparing the verses to his own situation; reassuring her at length that he is satisfied even though he did not receive the clerkship; further discussing his affairs.

Henry Dundas, the first Viscount Melville (1742-1811), statesman, was the father of Robert Saunders Dundas, the second Viscount Melville (1771-1851), also a statesman. Henry Dundas was educated at Edinburgh High School and University, before becoming solicitor-general for Scotland in 1766.
